I’ve started to summarize The Loved Bible Project as “Love a Bible. Give it away.” This started when I was asked about the project and started to sketch it out on a napkin.
5 Reminders as you get started with The Loved Bible Project
1 – Pray.
It’s so important to spend time in prayer. Before you start your Loved Bible, during and after. Pray that whoever receives this Bible, Jesus will pierce their heart, open their eyes to see and ears to hear. Also pray for God to stir your affections for Him during your time working on this Bible you are going to give away.
2 – Give it away.
There are lots of Bible journaling communities out there. This project is a little different. The intention is to give it away. Bibles are going to so many amazing people and places – for example – homeless, survivors of human trafficking, pregnancy care centers, cancer patients, families of special needs children, prison ministries, teachers and hurricane victims. I usually talk about this when I introduce the project to small groups, but giving it away has been eye-opening for me. Since each Bible is unique and I’ve spent considerable time pouring in notes and takeaways from things God has revealed to me during my time praying over that Bible, my selfishness is revealed when it’s time to give it away. I want to give it away to people I know, love dearly and know they will treasure it. But giving it away to stranger? Try it. And be changed.
3 – Cast away your doubt.
ANYONE can love a Bible. Cast away your fears of not being wise enough, not being creative enough, not having enough time. You will never be enough. It is in Christ that we are enough! Will you stop a moment? Grab a sticky note. Write down your ‘why not’ – it may come in the form of a fear, a doubt or even a comfort.
4 – Buy a Bible.
Purchase a leather (or like leather) 4×6 Bible. I like to use The New International Version or the English Standard Version. We encourage this size because it’s small and compact, which allows a person to take it with them. Initially my Bibles went to those in shelters either from homelessness or rescue homes. But then I started loving Bibles for stranger and friends alike. Some friends were going through very tough pregnancies, loss, marital issues, depression and several going through cancer. For some friends it was a gift of celebration, a thank you to a mentor, an unexpected gift, a wedding present, etc. The list is endless. The size is great to supplement their regular Bible or a great starter. It also encourages you to take it with you. Let this Loved Bible travel with you – in the car, to church, to Bible study. Let your time loving this Bible just be part of what you do, you’ll be surprised how much you love having this little Bible everywhere you go.
